16-year-old harnessing the power of gobos for youth ministry convention

Caleb Franke, a 16-year-old up-and-coming lighting designer, brought the magic of gobo lights and images to the Willamette Christian Center in Eugene, Oregon, for the Oregon Ministry Network Youth Convention in October. According to Live Design, Franke has done lighting design for several events already, making him one of the youngest LDs in the industry.

Franke utilized a variety of spots, profile, zooms and gobo projectors for the convention, focusing on incorporating backlighting, gobo images and full lighting as needed for the various talks and performances on the center's stage.

"When I was designing the rig we needed to transform the room from its church look to a special event conference style venue, so I really wanted to go with the full look of a floor to ceiling plot," Franke told the news source.

The young designer utilized a signature look for some of the convention, blending blue and white lights panning in random patterns during faster songs to get a full, wide lighting effect that spanned from floor to ceiling. He also incorporated a video wall into the design, ensuring that it blended well with the rest of the lighting without having either detract from the other.

Franke worked with Illuminate Production Services, which has provided lighting for the convention for the last seven years. The stage at the center is completely ground supported with no fly points, the news source noted, making it particularly challenging to light in certain aspects. This required the construction of several vertical trusses to support some of the lighting fixtures.
