Gobos can create flame and water through tricks of light and shadow

On stage in a closed theater, having open flame or pools of water may not seem like the best idea. However, careful application of lighting and custom gobos can help a production achieve the same effects and astonish crowds.

Using a projector with a gobo image to represent water or fire can create the illusion of these elements onstage, creating a safe environment for the actors and audience but still presenting the necessary setting and props needed to fulfill the demands of the play. A lighting designer can generate the sense of fire or water through the combination of two rotating gobos , simulating live fire or moving water. With the right sound effects, the audience may not even know the difference.

For a simpler setup, we carry the ECO Spot LED40WE, an effect projector that can resemble fluid effects including water or fire, depending on the color wheel and focus settings. This model is also available as exterior version ECO Spot LED40E-WE.

This application of gobos creates a much safer environment as well. In a closed theater the use of pyrotechnics can be a serious fire hazard, while frightening the audience as well if they aren't prepared. While effective for shock and awe shows, a setting that requires the gentle glow of a fireplace can be achieved in a much less dangerous way.

Water in particular is tricky in the theater, as it can cause serious damage to equipment or the stage itself if there's a leak or accident. Using a colored glass gobo and motion effects to simulate light reflecting off water can create a convincing illusion while eliminating these risks.
