Lighting system at World Cup Final will improve TV image, player visibility

Lighting for professional sporting events plays a critical role not just in helping players see clearly on the field, but allowing spectators, both in person and over television, to better assess what is going on in the game. With this in mind, the organizers of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil wanted to make sure that this year's final match delivered the highest-caliber visual experience for viewers.

To achieve this, they are employing a powerful lighting system that is promised to provide spectacular illumination to improve the game's appearance on high-definition television, as well as for players and those who are attending the match. It will be played at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on July 13.

Lighting for the event is being provided by General Electric (GE), who write on their website that the focus of their design was to reduce sky glow, eliminate shadows and provide a uniform distribution of light on the field using 396 GE EF2000 flood lights.

In addition to practical illumination, organizers of professional and amateur sporting events should also take into account how lighting can provide a spectacle in of itself that is entertaining for fans. What makes these types of events captivating for even casual fans is that they're often accompanied by a light show filled with dynamic motion effects, gobos and color washes that enhance the atmosphere.

If you'd like to achieve a similar look at your own sporting competition, one place to start is by purchasing custom gobos that can enhance the experience for your audience.
