Tips for designing a simpler logo

It's tempting to want a logo that is elaborate and beautiful for your company, but sometimes this isn't the best idea when it comes to branding. Whether you're using the logo for your business cards and printed materials, or you're going to order a custom gobo for live events, you want your logo to be something that is instantly recognizable and doesn't require viewers to dwell on it for too long before they remember which company it belongs to. A logo should work on both, white background, which is typical for print and on black background, which is typical for image projection as the black art is usually reversed to white light.

If you think about the Apple or Nike logos, one quality they have in common is that they're unmistakable — you don't need to read anything or look at them for more than a split second to know what they represent. With that in mind, here are some things to consider if you want to design a simple logo:

  • Create something that is flexible: Apple's logo works in part because it can show up in a variety of colors, settings and backgrounds and still retain its meaning. When designing your logo, see if it is still recognizable when you modify the color or surrounding imagery.
  • Don't imitate other logos: You may think that it's cute to create a logo that resembles the Coca-Cola writing or Google's multi-colored text, but your company definitely won't stand out, and eventually the charm of the design will wear out and seem derivative.
  • Make sure that it is scalable: The logo shouldn't have so much detail that when it is printed on small packages it is unrecognizable or difficult to read. If there are elements that become virtually invisible when shrunk, they should be removed.

Once you have your logo planned out, you'll need to create a visual experience for your trade shows, product releases and other events where the public will become acquainted with your brand. Make sure that you include in these efforts a set of custom gobos that you can use to add a professional polish to your presentation. For more information, check out our site today!
